Slow Ground 1996
Slow Ground is an artist book produced by the ANU School of Art ‘Edition and Artist Book Studio’ for ‘The Green House Project II’ which assembled in an edition of 25 contributions from artists and scientists that addressed the main themes of the ‘ANU Environmental Management Plan’. John Reid/Gilbert Riedelbauch’s rapid prototyped page contribution below.
A detail of John Reid’s photograph of Fellows Tree (see original photograph below) modified as a graphic test for a prototyped page as a contribution to Slow Ground.
John Reid / Gilbert Reidelbauch SLOW GROUND OBJECT PROTOTYPE. The Australian National University. 2002. 25.0 x 25.0 cm. 1996.
The rapid prototyped page is an image / text work for the artist book,Slow Ground. The image is a detail of Fellows Tree, the name given to a 150 - 200 year Eucalyptus rubida one of the oldest trees on the ANU campus, and the ground partially surrounding its base. In recent years, the tree has been invested as a symbol of resilience and fortitude by artists and musicians. The text refers to the tree as an example of a ‘slow differentiation’ of object and ground as opposed to the much-vaunted ‘rapid process’ by which this artwork has been made. The beholder of the work is invited to consider the actual tree as a prototype for the sort of tenacity we need to live sustainably; a prototype for the low exchange energy relationship we should have with our environment.
